$18 Million Linebacker Listed as Unexpected Trade Possibility for Lions

The Detroit Lions have taken a methodical approach to strengthening their defense over recent years, with general manager Brad Holmes transforming a previously weak unit into one that is now Super Bowl-contending. Linebacker Alex Anzalone has played a key role in that progress, starting all 57 games he’s been a part of during his four years with the team. However, one source has identified Anzalone as a surprising trade candidate as the new season approaches.

Could the Lions Move On from Anzalone?

According to Sportrac, there’s a possibility the Lions could trade the 30-year-old linebacker, who is in the final year of his three-year, $18 million deal. SI.com’s Emmett Matasovsky noted that while trading Anzalone would be unlikely, it could make sense for the team. Matasovsky explained that Anzalone, who is the oldest linebacker in the room, could be expendable given the recent additions of Grant Stuard and the re-signing of Derrick Barnes to a long-term contract.

Despite the speculation, Matasovsky acknowledged that Anzalone’s role on the team is vital. He’s not only the Lions’ best linebacker in pass coverage, but he also provides much-needed veteran leadership in the locker room. His absence due to a broken forearm was noticeably felt, as the Lions struggled when he wasn’t on the field. In fact, every game where the Lions allowed multiple passing touchdowns occurred while Anzalone was sidelined.

Lions May Be Preparing for Trade Moves

Although the team has not officially signaled an intention to trade Anzalone, general manager Brad Holmes hinted that a major move could be in the works. The Lions hold the 28th overall pick in next week’s NFL Draft, and Holmes suggested that they might be willing to trade up or down if the right opportunity arises.

Holmes emphasized that the Lions’ current roster is in a strong position, allowing the team to focus on acquiring the best talent available, rather than just filling specific needs. “In the early stages, we were more focused on addressing gaps. But now, we have a lot of really good players,” Holmes said at a pre-draft press conference. He also indicated that he is open to considering offers for the first-round pick if another team is interested.

Holmes stressed that the Lions will not settle for reaching on players simply to fill positions, and reiterated that while the media often speculates on their next move, the team remains flexible and open to improving the roster.
