2025 WCWS: Texas bats break out, seal first national championship with win over Texas Tech

After decades of chasing the crown, the Texas Longhorns softball team captured their first-ever Women’s College World Series (WCWS) national championship on Saturday night with a 7-3 victory over in-state rival Texas Tech, capping off a historic postseason run and solidifying their place among the sport’s elite.

In front of a raucous crowd at Hall of Fame Stadium, the Longhorns’ offense erupted in the title-clinching game, finally breaking through after a series of tense, low-scoring matchups throughout the tournament. The Longhorns jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, fueled by timely hitting, smart baserunning, and an unrelenting determination to bring the trophy home to Austin.

Offensive Surge Powers the Win

Texas set the tone early with a three-run second inning, highlighted by a towering two-run homer from junior slugger Kayla Boone, who was later named the WCWS Most Outstanding Player. Boone’s blast cleared the left-center field wall and sent the Longhorn faithful into a frenzy.

Senior infielder Janae Jefferson added two more RBIs on a clutch double in the fifth inning, while freshman sensation Aubrey Moreno chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance and a key stolen base.

“This was about more than just a game,” said Boone postgame. “It was about every player who came before us and laid the foundation. We finished it for them.”

Dominant Pitching and Tight Defense

Starting pitcher Mac Morgan delivered yet another gutsy performance, throwing six solid innings and limiting the Red Raiders’ dangerous lineup to just five hits. She worked out of several jams with help from her defense, which turned two crucial double plays to halt Tech’s momentum.

Closer Estelle Czech shut the door in the seventh, striking out the final batter to trigger a wave of burnt orange celebration on the field.

A Historic Moment for the Program

Texas, under head coach Mike White, had made deep postseason runs in recent years but had never reached the pinnacle — until now. With the win, the Longhorns finish the season with a 59-7 record and erase the sting of previous near-misses.

“We’ve talked about legacy all season,” said White. “Tonight, this group of women wrote theirs — in bold.”

The victory marks a turning point for the Longhorns’ program, ending Oklahoma’s recent dominance and ushering in a new era of championship softball deep in the heart of Texas.
