John Morton, the Detroit Lions’ newly appointed offensive coordinator, has a wealth of experience in the NFL, though he is not a widely recognized name. He will be replacing Ben Johnson after reports confirmed his hiring. Morton, a Michigan native from Auburn Hills and a Western Michigan graduate, has spent much of his career in coaching since starting in 1998, with his first coaching role as an offensive assistant for the Oakland Raiders. He also played as a wide receiver professionally from 1993-1997 in the NFL, CFL, and World League of American Football (WLAF).

Morton’s coaching career includes various roles, particularly focused on the passing game and wide receivers. He has coached some notable players over the years, including Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss, and Michael Thomas. Morton also served as the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator in 2017 but only for a season, as he reportedly clashed with head coach Todd Bowles. However, the situation was challenging, as the Jets had limited offensive talent at that time.
