With Jahmyr Gibbs breaking out as one of the Lions’ most dynamic offensive weapons this season, veteran running back David Montgomery has seen his role diminish significantly. A player who has been a starter for most of his career, Montgomery is now operating primarily behind Gibbs, resulting in the lowest averages of his career in both rushing attempts and yardage.
Head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged that the transition hasn’t been easy for Montgomery, but praised the way he has handled the situation.
Campbell explained that Montgomery approaches his work with professionalism and maturity, even though the reduced workload is clearly challenging. He emphasized that Montgomery is a talented runner who naturally wants to contribute more on the field, and it’s difficult for any competitive player to accept fewer opportunities. Despite that, Campbell said Montgomery stays prepared, maintains the right mindset, and is ready whenever his name is called. Campbell added that he often thinks about ways to get Montgomery more involved, noting that the offense performs at its best when all of its playmakers are contributing.
Looking ahead, Montgomery is set to earn $6 million in 2026, though none of that money is guaranteed. As a result, his future in Detroit is uncertain, and he could be approaching the end of his time with the team. Once the season concludes, Montgomery may explore options elsewhere in hopes of finding a situation where he can return to a starting role.
