Let me know if any of this sounds familiar, but a five-star prospect with connections to Prolific Prep recently went on national television to declare his dedication to BYU basketball on ESPN after reclassifying up a grade level.

Time is a circle in the world of collegiate basketball, and BYU basketball is having the best Groundhog Day scenario ever.

Bruce Branch III, the ESPN class of 2026’s No. 6 recruit and the class of 2027’s No. 1 recruit before reclassifying, cried on ESPN as he thanked everyone who helped him achieve his current position. Branch had to take a pause while talking about his family, acknowledging the hurdles they overcame together on his journey.

Branch stood from his chair, smiling as he regained his composure, and displayed royal blue beneath his jacket, proudly wearing BYU on the chest of his No. 3 jersey.

Bruce Branch III got emotional while discussing his mother before announcing his college commitment to BYU.

Branch’s dedication marks the third year in a row that Kevin Young’s program has signed a five-star rookie recruit, following Egor Demin, AJ Dybantsa, and now Bruce Brach III. It appears that Branch will be sporting number three in Provo, as did his predecessors, presuming that AJ Dybantsa decides to submit his name into the NBA Draft this summer.

Despite the team’s recent on-court troubles, BYU basketball’s recruiting performance has remained consistent. His final choice boiled down to only two institutions, BYU and USC, but Kevin Young’s NBA-level program, coaching style, and facilities persuaded Branch to move to Provo.

During Branch’s official trip, his coach highlighted the most appealing aspects of BYU’s program.

His trip to BYU was quite high-level. They presented him with what AJ Dybantsa is doing and believe he is capable of doing so, citing his height, stature, talent set, and ability to contribute in a variety of ways. Bruce enjoyed the basketball presentation, which included everything from workouts, practice, nutrition, strength and conditioning to recuperation and was presented as an NBA program. He got to watch them play Arizona and observe how they function on game day.

One key aspect is the omission of any financial reference. With the top-level athletes undoubtedly getting significant NIL checks across the board, recruiting boils down to one critical question: Which program will best prepare these young players for progression to the professional level? In the case of Bruce Branch III, the response was BYU.
