The Detroit Lions may have to address a growing concern along the offensive line if they want to remain serious contenders this season.

Detroit’s line went through major changes over the offseason. Frank Ragnow announced his retirement, while veteran guard Kevin Zeitler opted to join the Tennessee Titans in free agency. In response, the Lions shifted Graham Glasgow into the center role, leaving both guard spots less stable than a year ago.

That shuffling was quickly exposed in Week 1. The Green Bay Packers dominated Detroit in the trenches, highlighting just how much the unit has slipped since being regarded as one of the NFL’s most reliable in 2024. The Packers are a talented opponent, but the Lions can’t ignore the fact that their offensive line no longer looks like a championship-caliber group.

Because the Lions were the NFC’s top seed last year, urgency is high to find a solution. Analysts have already suggested that Detroit explore the trade market, and Joel Bitonio of the Cleveland Browns has surfaced as a prime target.

A Proven Star on the Block?

Bitonio has spent his entire career in Cleveland, where he’s earned seven straight Pro Bowl appearances and five consecutive All-Pro honors between 2018 and 2022. At 34, he’s still performing at a high level — his Week 1 outing against the Cincinnati Bengals reaffirmed his consistency.

But the Browns appear to be transitioning toward a younger roster. With a demanding schedule and several rookies in key roles, Cleveland may consider moving on from a veteran like Bitonio, who doesn’t quite fit their timeline. For Detroit, however, his experience and stability could be invaluable.

Potential Trade Package

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report floated the idea of Detroit offering a mid-round draft pick along with rookie receiver Dominic Lovett in exchange for Bitonio.

Detroit does have young talent waiting in the wings, including Tate Ratledge, who is slotted in at right guard. Still, there are glaring questions at left guard, where Christian Mahogany graded near the bottom of Pro Football Focus’ pass-blocking rankings in Week 1. That leaves an opening for a proven veteran like Bitonio.

Cleveland, meanwhile, has depth concerns at wide receiver, which makes Lovett a logical piece to include. However, his limited usage — just three special teams snaps in the opener — means the Browns may not view him as a significant asset.

What It Might Take

Realistically, Cleveland could push for more. A third-round pick seems like a fairer value for a player of Bitonio’s caliber, even with his age factored in. Detroit may hesitate at that price, but securing one of the league’s most dependable linemen could be worth the investment.

For Bitonio, a move to Detroit would provide a legitimate chance to chase a Super Bowl before retirement. For the Lions, it could be the final piece needed to restore their offensive line and keep their championship window wide open.
