8-Time Pro Bowler with 186 Games Played and 129.5 Sacks Signs with the Detroit Lions in a Blockbuster Proposed Trade Deal

As the initial frenzy of free agency winds down, the Detroit Lions have kept a relatively low profile. Their most notable acquisition so far has been cornerback D.J. Reed, who signed a three-year, $48 million contract. He is expected to step in as a starter, filling the void left by Carlton Davis.

Beyond that, the Lions have primarily focused on retaining their own talent. Defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike and edge rusher Marcus Davenport have both agreed to one-year deals to remain in Detroit.

One area that remains a priority for improvement is the pass rush. While Aidan Hutchinson has established himself as a dominant force, he lacks consistent support on the edge. Even after suffering a season-ending injury last October, he still led the team in sacks, highlighting the need for additional firepower.

Von Miller as a Potential Solution

Veteran pass rusher Von Miller has emerged as a logical target for Detroit. Recently released by the Buffalo Bills after a three-year stint, Miller could provide much-needed depth and experience.

Analyst Adam Hulse from Sportskeeda sees Detroit as an ideal landing spot for Miller. He points out that Hutchinson’s absence last season exposed the team’s lack of depth, making a veteran presence like Miller’s a valuable addition. Given that the Lions are positioning themselves as Super Bowl contenders, the move could appeal to the experienced pass rusher.

Miller’s 2024 Resurgence

After an injury-plagued 2023 campaign, Miller bounced back in 2024, proving he still has plenty left in the tank. He recorded 17 tackles, six sacks, seven tackles for loss, and eight quarterback hits. His performance earned him an impressive 82.4 grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking 11th among 211 pass rushers with an 83.0 pass-rush grade.

Miller’s struggles in 2023 were largely due to an ACL injury suffered in late 2022, which impacted his explosiveness. However, his performance last season suggests he remains a capable rotational pass rusher. In Detroit, he could form a formidable duo with Hutchinson while sharing snaps with Davenport.

A Decorated Career and a Logical Fit

With eight Pro Bowl appearances, three first-team All-Pro selections, and two Super Bowl rings, Miller’s résumé speaks for itself. Over his 13-year career, he has recorded double-digit sack totals in seven seasons, cementing his status as one of the best pass rushers of his era.

Financially, the Lions are in a strong position, with roughly $55 million in available cap space. Given that Miller is nearing his 36th birthday, he likely won’t demand a long-term or high-priced contract. A one-year deal could be an ideal solution for both parties, providing Detroit with a proven playmaker and Miller with another shot at competing for a championship.
