According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, the Dallas Cowboys are giving wide receiver CeeDee Lamb’s contract extension priority over quarterback Dak Prescott’s new agreement.

“The good news is the Cowboys made Lamb their No. 1 priority,” Watkins stated.

“According to a person with knowledge of the front office’s thinking, the Cowboys are putting Lamb’s contract extension talks ahead of quarterback Dak Prescott’s.”

Both Lamb and Prescott will be free agents after the 2024-25 season.

The study is released one week before the Cowboys’ training camp in California. It’s unclear, per Watkins, if Lamb has chosen to carry out his contract holdout.

“When Lamb arrives in Southern California for work is unknown,” Watkins stated. “An individual acquainted with Lamb’s thought process stated that a definitive determination regarding his holdout status has not yet been reached until training camp commences. Though the conversations have been sluggish thus far, they may quicken once the team reaches California. The Cowboys want Lamb in camp.”

Dallas put Lamb first, probably partly because he was holding out. The Cowboys may feel less pressure to consummate a deal because they won’t have to worry about starting the season without their best quarterback. “Prescott is expected to be on the field next Thursday for the first training camp practice of the summer,” Watkins stated. “You can finalize Prescott’s expected massive contract later with the understanding he’s coming to work.”

As the Cowboys get set for training camp, it’s evident that Lamb and Prescott are two of the most important players in the organization’s possible Super Bowl push. Last year, Lamb topped the league in receptions (135), receiving yards (1,749), and touchdowns (12). He merely wants to improve on it this year because it was by far the best season of his career. With 4,516 throwing yards and 36 touchdowns in one of his best seasons to date, Prescott is a strong candidate to win the MVP award for the league.
