Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, and Deion Sanders, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, are two of sports’ most outspoken authority today. It should not come as a big surprise.

This has been the situation for more than 30 years. They have large personalities. They aren’t frightened to express their opinions. We mean everyone.

Almost three decades after Sanders assisted Jones and the Cowboys to their last Super Bowl victory, the two remain major influences in sports.

Since taking over as Colorado’s head coach before last season, Sanders has been the center of attention in Boulder. Some on-field success, combined with a lot of off-field scandal, has gotten him a lot of attention.

He has made headlines for himself. In Dallas, the Cowboys have not earned a position in the NFC Championship Game since Sanders was a star in Big D in 1995. Since then, the Cowboys have focused solely on playoff futility.

So, why are we linking these two together? We’re glad you asked.

Jones just had an in-person interview with Stephen A. Smith. The focus shifted to Sanders and whether Dallas’ enigmatic owner might consider employing him as head coach at some point.

His reaction was intriguing (one hour and six minutes). “No, but he can spell well enough to not answer a hypothetical question. Jerry Jones expressed admiration for Deion Sanders, both on and off the field. “Some of the best stories that I have to tell about my time in sports have been Deion-type stories.”

The Cowboys were humiliated by the Green Bay Packers during the NFC Wild Card Playoffs. That followed two consecutive playoff losses to the rival San Francisco 49ers leading up to the 2023 season.

Certainly, head coach Mike McCarthy is under fire heading into the 2024 season. This does not imply that Sanders will be visiting Dallas anytime soon. Jones made that abundantly obvious.
