The Detroit Lions made several roster adjustments on Wednesday, promoting nose tackle Kyle Peko to the active roster and signing two players to their practice squad.
The Lions announced the signing of veteran nose tackle Kyle Peko to their active roster, while defensive tackle Chris Smith, who was released earlier in the week, was re-signed to the practice squad. The team also confirmed kicker Greg Joseph’s addition to the practice squad, a move that had been previously reported.
Peko, who spent most of training camp as the Lions’ starting nose tackle while DJ Reader was on the PUP list, played 47% of the defensive snaps against the Rams in Week 1. Despite Reader’s expected return to action this week, the Lions may ease him back slowly due to his recovery from a long-term injury. Consequently, Peko could see significant playing time in Week 2 and possibly beyond.
Additionally, Peko’s veteran status in the NFL meant his contract would have been guaranteed for the entire season if he had been on the Week 1 roster. However, by signing him in Week 2, the Lions secured a standard contract, allowing flexibility to re-evaluate their defensive line when second-year tackle Brodric Martin becomes eligible to return from injured reserve during their Week 5 bye.
Smith, praised by coach Dan Campbell for his consistent improvement, returns to the practice squad with three elevations available for future games, providing depth as needed.
General manager Brad Holmes had indicated the Lions would add a veteran kicker to the practice squad during the season, a role now filled by Joseph. With Peko’s promotion, a practice squad spot was cleared for Joseph’s signing.
