Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff had a hilarious reaction after learning he played a perfect 18-18 game against the Seahawks.
The Detroit Lions defeated the Seattle Seahawks during Monday Night Football on September 30, winning 42-29. This was a significant victory, as the Lions hadn’t beaten the Seahawks since 2012.
It was an especially great night for Jared Goff, who completed all 18 of his pass attempts for 292 yards. Goff was so focused on the game that he didn’t even realize he had a perfect game until a sideline reporter told him.
After the win, ESPN’s Lisa Salters interviewed Goff. When she mentioned his 18-18 stats for the night, he had a funny response.
“Was I?” Goff asked, smiling. He didn’t realize it, which made it even funnier. Goff admitted that he was trying to remember if he had any incompletions but couldn’t, so Salters gave him the good news.
“It’s good when the ball doesn’t hit the ground, it’s a good day,” Goff said.
After the game, Lions head coach Dan Campbell commented, “I knew he played a heck of a game. I didn’t realize he was perfect. I didn’t know he was literally 18-for-18. But I knew he played really well. You could feel it.”
Goff was already 12-12 when he made things better by catching a touchdown pass from Amon-Ra St. Brown for a 7-yard score.
“No, I think that’s my first one, too. Ever,” Goff said of the touchdown catch. “All the way back to 7 years old, I think that’s my first one.”
Goff said the tricky play had been in the works for a while, and Monday night was the perfect time to use it.
“That play’s been in for a long time, but we never got the right situation to call it,” Goff said. “I think we actually have called it before, but if it’s not the right look, I get out of it. But this time, it was the right look.”
On Monday, Goff set a record as the first quarterback in NFL history to attempt 15 or more passes with no incompletions in a single game, according to NFL Research. Goff and St. Brown also became the fifth duo in NFL history to each have a passing and receiving touchdown in the same game, per ESPN research.
Additionally, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery each scored a rushing touchdown, marking the sixth game in which a Lions duo tied the franchise record.
The Lions head into their bye week with the win. They’ll face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, October 13, in Cowboys territory.
