The Seattle Seahawks lost their opening game under Mike Macdonald, 42-29, to the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football, effectively playing with one hand behind their back.
Both offenses had historically successful nights, while the Seahawks defense had historically poor nights.

Following the Seattle Seahawks’ Week 4 loss to the Detroit Lions, there were three major overreactions.
“Under the bright lights of Monday Night Football, the defense failed to perform.”
The defense was not physically present, so it did not show up! You are playing the league’s most physical running squad, and you lose the best safety in football thus far at halftime. You also start the game without one of your starting linebackers, one of your four most skilled defensive linemen. While it is acceptable to feel let down by what we saw on Monday, we also need to maintain perspective. That constituted preseason play.
After three games, the Seahawks’ defensive numbers were historically high, especially when players like Leonard Williams and Boye Mafe were occupying the opponent’s backfield. A 17-game season merely makes future Monday nights more feasible. Because of this roster’s health, Macdonald is playing the long game and making it more of a marathon than ever before.
The atmosphere of this game is completely different with a healthy roster.
“We lose the game because DK makes these dumb plays all the time.”
Does DK occasionally have a stupid penalty? Yes, but when you are the biggest and most dominant player on the field every night, that is what may happen. DK is compelled to remain confined and faces ongoing challenges. I think he is come a long way.
It is ridiculous to get outraged when the fifth player to try to bring him down punches the ball out after he did what we all ask him to do every week—put his body on the line and go through guys.
The Seahawks appear to be a darkhorse contender for the NFC and are a playoff club, which would not be the case if DK did not perform as DK does.

I genuinely feel that if (when) these two teams were to face up again in January, we’d see a different outcome.
With everything working against them, the Seahawks had no business being in that game, but they were only one turnover and one irritating penalty away from taking the game on the road. Macdonald was displeased with his team’s play on the defensive end of the ball, if not humiliated. As the main man in Seattle, this is his first real test.
The Seahawks have legitimate concerns this week, but it would be absurd to claim that they were exposed. On Monday night, the offensive did more than reveal the haters. After much discussion since 2022, Geno Smith shown that he is prepared to advance and take the next step to become the team’s quarterback. Kenneth Walker and Metcalf demonstrated that they are prepared to become For the offensive, this is an awakening, and for the defense, it is a teaching moment. This is an exciting time for the 12th Man, even though the defense needs to get healthier for what seems to be a challenging schedule of games over the next two months. The chance to seize control of the NFC West still exists.
