Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, is still considering selecting Taco Charlton over T.J. Watt, the premier pass rusher for the Pittsburgh Steelers, in the 2017 NFL Draft. On 105.3 The Fan, Jones acknowledged that although he makes an effort not to worry about losing Watt, the Steelers star’s passing still weighs heavily on his mind.
On 105.3 The Fan, Jones stated, “I do, but I don’t.” You could have selected so many different players in the draft. What worries you are the ones you have, not the ones you do not have. There are ten people who have not performed as well as Watt.That year, Watt was selected by the Steelers with the thirty-first overall choice, while Charlton was selected just two picks earlier at the twenty-eighth spot. Over his career, Charlton has racked up 11.5 sacks. He plays for the Birmingham Stallions in the United Football League. In the meantime, Watt might record his 100th career sack against the Cowboys on Sunday, making history as the third-fastest player to do so in NFL history.
After the Steelers added Charlton to their active roster in 2021, Charlton and Watt were teammates. He played out the season in Pittsburgh, but at the end of the campaign, he did not sign another contract.
Although Jones has had a successful career overall, he will always look back on the 2017 pass on the innocent-looking Wisconsin edge rusher as one of his biggest regrets as the Cowboys’ decision-maker.
