On Saturday, October 12, the Detroit Lions re-upped with running back David Montgomery, a top offensive player, to a two-year contract extension worth more than $18 million. The information was first revealed by ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter in an X post on Saturday night. “Lions RB David Montgomery reached agreement on a two-year, $18.25 million extension that contractually ties him to Detroit through the 2027 season, per source,” according to Schefter. “New guaranteed funds totaling $10.5 million are part of the agreement. Montgomery’s current contract had two years remaining on it. Detroit is taking early care of its own.”

After playing his first four seasons as a professional for the NFC North Division rival Chicago Bears, running back Montgomery was signed by the Lions in March 2023 to a three-year contract worth a total of $18 million.

The 27-year-old bruiser’s new contract reflects the value he has brought to the Lions during his first 21 games on the team.

In the Lions’ two-pronged rushing attack, he is the thunder to Jahmyr Gibbs’ lightning. Montgomery’s rookie season with Detroit in 2023 saw him accumulate 1,015 running yards and 13 rushing touchdowns in 14 games. For 117 yards, he also grabbed 16 passes. According to Pro Football Reference, in four games this season, Montgomery has gained 271 yards and four touchdowns on the ground in addition to nine receptions on nine targets for 94 receiving yards.
