Detroit Lions’ star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson suffered a severe leg injury during the team’s dominant 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

While sacking Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in the third quarter, Hutchinson’s leg collided with teammate Alim McNeill. He remained on the ground, removing his gloves and helmet as medical staff tended to him. An air cast was applied before he was carted off the field.

After the game, Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed Hutchinson had broken his tibia and underwent immediate surgery at a hospital in Dallas.

“He’s getting the care he needs and will stay here (in Dallas) for now,” Campbell said. “He’s going to be out for a while. Losing someone like him is tough. We’ll know more soon, but we’re wishing him the best.”

The entire Detroit team gathered around Hutchinson as trainers treated him, with quarterback Jared Goff standing closest. Hutchinson’s teammates offered support as he was carted away.

“These are tough moments for everyone, seeing something like that happen to one of your own,” Campbell said. “But our guys and coaches did well refocusing. You can’t dwell on it too long or risk getting hurt yourself.”

Hutchinson had been a frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year this season. Prior to Sunday, he led the league with 6.5 sacks and 40 pressures. This is his first NFL game missed due to injury.

Hutchinson’s absence is a significant setback for the Lions, who are already without fellow pass rusher Marcus Davenport, who suffered a season-ending injury in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.
