October 14: Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys and the team’s general manager, says he “hasn’t even considered” firing head coach Mike McCarthy. “I’m not thinking about that. To be clear, I’m not thinking about it,” Jones stated on Sunday night following the Cowboys’ humiliating 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions, which was the worst home loss since Jones bought the franchise.

The Cowboys are in third place in the NFC East, behind the Philadelphia Eagles (3-2) and Washington Commanders (4-2) with a 3-3 record going into the bye week. They are also 0-6 at home and 3-0 away. Dallas has given up 168 points, resulting in a score difference of minus-42, while ten NFC clubs have three or more victories. That ranks 15th out of 16 teams in the conference and is superior to only the Carolina Panthers, who are 1-5 (203 points allowed).

“Well, the fact that we’re 3-3 disappoints us,” Jones stated. “I don’t necessarily hold McCarthy solely responsible for the three-loss aspect of it. The players will also claim that they were involved. You can find out from his other staff members. It’s not entirely his fault, and the owner will undoubtedly admit that he had some involvement.”

Key defensive players like as 2023 Pro Bowl cornerback DaRon Bland (foot), veteran defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, and All-Pro Micah Parsons (ankle) were not available for the Cowboys’ game against the Lions. When Lawrence was placed on injured reserve two weeks ago due to a foot ailment, he was leading the team with 3.0 sacks. According to quarterback Dak Prescott, McCarthy has the support of the players. After three straight seasons with a 12-5 record, he is currently in the last year of his contract.

For the second straight game, Dallas did not score a touchdown in the first three quarters. The Cowboys’ lone touchdowns in a 10-quarter stretch beginning with the third quarter against the New York Giants were 14 points in the fourth quarter, which helped them escape Pittsburgh with a Week 5 victory. The running game was eliminated after the Cowboys fell behind the Lions 27-3, and they ended up with 53 yards on the ground. Dallas has failed to reach 70 rushing yards for the third time in the last five games.

“In general, I believe my message is that we’re in the proverbial s— right now, but I know you don’t need to hear me say this,” Jones stated.
