The running back situation in Dallas has been a disaster all season. The Cowboys rank last in the NFL in rushing yards, touchdown, and yards per carry.
Jerry Jones may not want to admit it, but the offseason decisions have clearly failed as the team struggles with the worst rushing attack in the league.
The biggest offseason mistake might have been bringing back Ezekiel Elliott. Not only has he been poor, averaging 3 yards per carry, but he’s also frustrated with his role, clashing with the coaching staff.
Things could get worse for Zeke after head coach Mike McCarthy’s recent comments. McCarthy said after the humiliating Week 6 loss that Rico Dowdle needs more touches.
Dowdle getting more work will come at Elliott’s expense. Zeke played 28 snaps Sunday, his most since Week 1, with eight carries for just 17 yards. Dowdle, meanwhile, had five carries for 25 yards and five receptions for 30 yards against the Lions.
While Dowdle hasn’t been outstanding, he’s performed better than Elliott, making McCarthy’s comments reasonable.
However, the effect on Zeke and the team remains to be seen. With Deuce Vaughn inactive the last two weeks, the Cowboys have limited options if Elliott is further demoted.
The running back problem will continue unless the front office makes changes, limiting the offense’s potential.
