The Detroit Lions swiftly added depth at defensive end after Aidan Hutchinson’s season-ending injury in Week 6 against Dallas.

On Tuesday, they signed defensive end Isaiah Thomas from the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad. Coach Dan Campbell explained the process of making such moves alongside general manager Brad Holmes.

“When it comes to these moves, Brad has a database of guys we’ve scouted from other practice squads,” said Campbell. “Often, it’s players we liked during the draft or who showed production elsewhere. Brad will bring up a name, and we evaluate what they’ve done since then.”

The process relies heavily on trust between Campbell and Holmes. Campbell emphasized that signing Thomas didn’t signal an end to roster moves addressing Hutchinson’s absence.

“I trust Brad completely,” Campbell said. “If he says it’s gold, it’s gold. This move felt right. Thomas adds competition, which is what we need. But it doesn’t mean we’re done making moves.”

Opening Thoughts on Minnesota

During a radio appearance, Campbell shared initial thoughts on the Minnesota Vikings ahead of Sunday’s NFC North showdown.

“Every year, this team is talented and well-coached. O’Connell’s great, and bringing Flores in has been a fantastic addition.

They’ve got one of the best receivers, Justin Jefferson, and Sam Darnold’s playing great. Their running back from Green Bay is also doing well,” Campbell said.

The Vikings, starting 5-0, have seen major contributions from Jefferson and running back Aaron Jones. Their defense, led by coordinator Brian Flores, has also been strong.

“They pose challenges for us with their defensive schemes,” Campbell said. “We’ll need to be sharp in identifying protections, especially with players like Van Ginkel, who can either rush or drop back.”

Campbell also acknowledged the difficulties of playing in Minnesota’s loud U.S. Bank Stadium, where the Vikings’ offense is currently excelling.
