Wide receiver Deebo Samuel played only four snaps during the San Francisco 49ers’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday because of an illness.

He was later hospitalized with pneumonia and stayed there into Monday evening, according to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan.

“It started during the night on Saturday or early Sunday morning,” Shanahan told Bay Area reporters during a conference call.

“And it got worse as the day went on. After the game, when we found out he had fluid in his lungs, they sent him to the hospital.”

Shanahan said he learned Samuel had been hospitalized after returning home on Sunday night.

There is no clear timeline for Samuel’s release from the hospital or his return to practice or games, Shanahan noted.

The 49ers, after their 28-18 loss to the Chiefs, are set to play next Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys. Following their Week 8 matchup, they will have a bye week.

Samuel currently ranks fourth on the team with 20 receptions for 335 yards and one touchdown through seven games this season.

Jauan Jennings, the 49ers’ leading receiver with 404 yards, missed Sunday’s game due to a hip injury. His availability for the Cowboys game is still uncertain.

The 49ers were without their top three wide receivers for most of Sunday’s game.

Brandon Aiyuk, the third-leading receiver, is out for the season after tearing his ACL and MCL in his right knee, Shanahan said.
