A trade proposal suggests the Dallas Cowboys could land Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb.
The Dallas Cowboys need help at running back, even if owner Jerry Jones won’t admit it. Cowboys fans would likely love to see Browns star Nick Chubb wearing their team’s logo.
Dallas has until Tuesday, November 5, 2024, to make a deal before the NFL trade deadline passes. Jeff Howe of The Athletic proposed a trade in which the Cowboys would acquire Chubb from the Browns.
Dallas sends a 2025 third-round pick and a sixth-round pick to Cleveland in return for Chubb. The Athletic estimates this would increase the Cowboys’ playoff chances by 3%, from 23% to 26%. It’s not a move that makes the Cowboys instant Super Bowl contenders, but it could improve the roster.
“The Cowboys are last in rushing yards, touchdowns, and yards per attempt,” Howe wrote in an October 23, 2024, article titled “Six NFL Trades We’d Like to See: Maxx Crosby to Lions, Nick Chubb to Cowboys.” “Why? They’re 30th in attempts. They lack the personnel, and Mike McCarthy hasn’t committed to the running game.
“Being unbalanced has caused three of their games to spiral early. Chubb has the star power Jerry Jones loves. Although it’s risky with Chubb coming off a serious knee injury, the potential reward could be huge if he finishes the season as a top-10 back.”
Would the Cowboys Trade for Nick Chubb?
It’s a move that would show Dallas is still aiming for success this season. The Cowboys stayed quiet in the offseason and didn’t draft a running back in 2024.
There are potential concerns for Dallas to consider before trading for Chubb. He will be a free agent in 2025 and has a $6.2 million cap hit for 2024.
Chubb missed the start of the season after having his second reconstructive knee surgery. He has played only three games over the past two seasons.
In Week 8, Chubb had 11 carries for 22 yards and a touchdown. Trading for a player recovering from a serious injury and approaching free agency could be risky for Dallas.
Chubb has an impressive resume as a four-time Pro Bowler. He posted four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons before injuries impacted the past two years.
Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Had Heated Response to Roster Questions
Jones has insisted that the Cowboys do not plan to make a big mid-season move. For now, the team will likely rely on Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott, with Dalvin Cook as a potential option. During the bye week, Jones reacted strongly to questions about the roster.
“This isn’t your job. Your job isn’t to make me explain why I did something and apologize for it,” Jones said in an October 15 interview with 105.3 The Fan’s “Shan and RJ.” “That’s not your job.
“I’ll get someone else to ask these questions. I’m not joking. You’re not going to figure out what the team is doing right or wrong.”
