An NFL analyst suggests the Detroit Lions might land a three-time Pro Bowler at a bargain.

With the NFL trade deadline on November 5, teams looking to buy or sell have limited time to make deals. For the Detroit Lions, finding a strong defensive end is crucial, as Aidan Hutchinson is sidelined with a broken tibia for the rest of the season.

According to Brad Berreman of SideLion Report, one possible replacement could be a “great schematic fit” for the Lions without costing much. While no one can truly replace Hutchinson, the Lions need someone to stabilize the defense until he returns.

‘ Versatile’ Player Could Bolster the Lions Defense

Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns has been suggested as a possible fill-in, and Berreman explains why.

“Smith’s name is easily linked to the Lions, especially now with Hutchinson’s season-ending injury,” Berreman wrote on October 22.

“Smith (6-foot-4, 275 pounds) appears to be an excellent fit for the Lions’ scheme, versatile and skilled in both pass-rushing and run defense,” Berreman said. “With four sacks and three tackles for loss this season, Pro Football Focus ranks him as a top-50 edge defender with a 67.6 overall grade and 15 pressures.”

Another bonus: Smith’s acquisition wouldn’t strain the Lions’ budget.

“A team acquiring him would take on the prorated part of his $1.21 million base salary this year, and his $1.5 million base salary for next year isn’t guaranteed,” Berreman added. “At age 32, Smith may not fit into any Browns rebuild, making a draft pick trade for him attractive.”

In an October 28 feature, Berreman noted, “The 2-6 Browns are likely deadline sellers, and Smith is a valuable asset. Though he spoke on possibly joining the Lions, he publicly showed commitment to Cleveland at a tough time.”

Smith Expresses Interest in Detroit Move

Smith has hinted at interest in joining the Lions.

“That’s a big loss for them,” Smith told The Chronicle on October 18, referring to Hutchinson’s injury. “But if I were to go to Detroit, I’d like it because I’d get to play the Packers and Vikings twice each year.”

A player eager to face Green Bay and Minnesota seems like a great match for the Lions. He’s got my support.

The Lions have various options to replace Hutchinson, each with pros and cons. In his Week 8 NFL Trade Block Big Board, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report mentioned Chase Young of the New Orleans Saints as a potential trade target for the Lions.

“The Lions would be a logical landing spot for any available edge-rushers, and they should consider Young if he’s available,” Knox wrote.
