The Detroit Lions are surpassing high expectations in 2024, holding a 6-1 record after a dominant 52-14 win against the Tennessee Titans in Week 8.
Dan Campbell’s team leads the NFC North and is emerging as the top team in the conference. The Lions’ offense has consistently scored over 30 points in their last four games, while the defense continues to improve and make crucial plays each week.
Despite a strong roster, the Lions face weaknesses, particularly in pass-rushing. Season-ending injuries to Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport have left a gap in their edge rushing, pushing the Lions to seek reinforcements before the Nov. 5 trade deadline.
Pro Football Network’s Dallas Robinson suggests that Titans’ edge rusher Arden Key would fit well in Detroit. Robinson’s proposed trade involves the Lions sending a 2025 seventh-round pick for Key’s addition.
While Key alone may not fill the Lions’ EDGE void, his tenacity could benefit the team. The 28-year-old has recorded at least 4.5 sacks annually since 2021 and has been a reliable rotational rusher for three different teams. Although he’s slightly undersized (240 pounds) for the Lions’ scheme, his play style aligns with Campbell’s vision.
Key, not being an elite rusher, would still step in as the Lions’ lead edge rusher, adding depth and experience. This season, he has tallied three sacks and 13 QB pressures, with a standout performance in Week 8 against the Lions, where he logged two sacks and three stops.
Moreover, Key’s affordable contract and a 2025 seventh-round draft pick as compensation make the trade feasible. GM Brad Holmes should find it easy to make a deal with Tennessee to bring the high-energy defender to Detroit.
For now, the Lions will put trade discussions on hold, as they prepare to visit Lambeau Field for a Week 9 matchup against the Green Bay Packers. With the NFC North as the NFL’s most competitive division, these divisional games will be crucial for Campbell’s squad.
