Jerry Jones has set the Dallas Cowboys up for future challenges by maintaining a coaching staff with expiring contracts for the 2024 season. By keeping head coach Mike McCarthy and his team in place without long-term commitments, he has created an environment focused solely on immediate results, which undermines the team’s long-term goals.

As the Cowboys sit at 3-4 in Week 9, their playoff hopes are dwindling, making it clear that winning the Super Bowl in 2024 is no longer the only objective. The team must also prioritize building for the future. However, the current coaching staff is not invested in long-term development, as their focus is exclusively on the present season.

This lack of foresight means the coaches are hesitant to test younger players like Asim Richards and Juanyeh Thomas, who could be vital for the team beyond 2024. Without giving these players the chance to prove themselves, the Cowboys miss an opportunity to evaluate their roster effectively, which could impact their offseason strategy.

The situation is further complicated by the Cowboys’ underperformance, which has left them on track for a disappointing season and a potential top 10 draft pick. While McCarthy may have the team’s best interests in mind, his lack of motivation stemming from his contract status means he is less inclined to focus on the future.

To address this disconnect, the Cowboys’ front office may need to take a more hands-on approach during games, or risk continuing down a path where the coaching staff shows little regard for the long-term health of the franchise. This predicament is a direct result of decisions made by Jones and the organization as a whole.
