Holding a 6-1 record and the second-highest Super Bowl odds (+600) via DraftKings, the Detroit Lions are enjoying an exceptional season.
Yet, a major challenge threatens their playoff drive: Aidan Hutchinson, a leading Defensive Player of the Year candidate, may be out for the season following a leg injury against the Dallas Cowboys. NFL analyst Kevin Patra of NFL.com has floated a blockbuster trade suggestion that could enhance the Lions’ championship potential.
Detroit Lions’ Pass Rushing Void
Despite their strong start, the Lions’ defense now faces a critical need for a top-tier pass rusher. Patra argues Detroit must act if they are serious about winning the Lombardi Trophy in February, recommending Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson as a prime trade target
He notes, “I’m still skeptical the Bengals will become sellers despite their poor start. It’s not typical of their approach. But Hendrickson made a trade request due to contract issues in the offseason, so Cincy might move now to avoid further complications in the final year of his deal in 2025.”
An Experienced Option
Trey Hendrickson is a logical fit for Detroit for several reasons. Lions head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn know Hendrickson from his time with the New Orleans Saints (2017–2020). Patra notes, “He plays with the type of drive Campbell admires and would be a great locker room fit.” With seven sacks and 36 quarterback pressures so far this season, Hendrickson has been dominant on the edge.
The Lions’ recent difficulty generating pressure, especially in their win over the Tennessee Titans, makes this trade even more pressing. Detroit only managed one sack on Titans quarterback Mason Rudolph, exposing a significant weakness in their pass rush without Hutchinson. As Patra observes, “Even in Sunday’s blowout, against a Titans squad with a weak right side, Detroit struggled to bring consistent pressure.”
Pursuit of a Championship
While Detroit has the talent to sustain their success without making a trade, a stronger defense could boost their Super Bowl chances..
Patra argues, “To lift a Lombardi trophy in February, they need reinforcement.” Adding Trey Hendrickson would not only replace Hutchinson’s impact but also strengthen Detroit against elite offenses.
With the trade deadline nearing, Lions fans will watch management closely to see if they take the leap for a game-changing pass rusher. Landing Hendrickson could solidify their defensive line and sharpen their playoff edge.
The stakes are high, and with each week, the need to reinforce the roster grows clearer. Now is the time for the Lions to seize their opportunity and make a season-defining move.
