The Detroit Lions bolstered their defensive line by acquiring veteran pass rusher Za’Darius Smith in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. The deal, finalized on Tuesday ahead of the trade deadline, sends a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round pick to Cleveland in exchange for Smith and a 2026 draft pick. This move provides much-needed help to Detroit’s defense, which has struggled to consistently generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Smith, 32, has had a solid season so far, recording five sacks and 20 quarterback hurries through nine games with the Browns. He brings a wealth of experience, having previously played for the Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings before joining Cleveland. Smith posted double-digit sack seasons in both Green Bay (2019, 2020) and Minnesota (2022), and his ability to pressure quarterbacks will be key to Detroit’s defensive improvement.

The Lions have been dealing with several key injuries that have impacted their pass rush. Star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson has been sidelined since Week 6 with a broken leg, while defensive end Marcus Davenport and linebacker Derrick Barnes are also out with long-term injuries. These absences have hurt the Lions’ ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks, making the addition of Smith all the more crucial.

In addition to his pass-rushing ability, Smith is known for his ability to set the edge and handle double teams in the run game. This makes him a versatile addition to Detroit’s defensive front, where head coach Aaron Glenn values a well-rounded skillset. Smith’s size (6-4, 270 pounds) and physicality should enhance the Lions’ run defense, complementing their existing defensive personnel.

The Lions are eager to integrate Smith into their defense as quickly as possible, with an important game against Houston looming. While it’s uncertain how quickly Smith will be fully acclimated to Detroit’s defensive schemes, head coach Glenn is optimistic about his ability to contribute right away, particularly in specific defensive packages. With the potential return of Josh Paschal from illness, Detroit’s pass rush is expected to improve as they push for the top spot in the NFC
