Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott may need more than four weeks to recover from his right hamstring injury, as reported on Wednesday.
According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, Prescott’s injury involves part of his tendon detaching from the bone, making it more serious than expected.
With Prescott sidelined, backup quarterback Cooper Rush is set to take over. Rush has experience in this role, including a 2022 stint when he led the Cowboys to a 4-1 record while Prescott recovered from a thumb injury.
Coach Mike McCarthy praised Rush, noting his advantage goes beyond system familiarity.
“(His) temperament is excellent,” McCarthy told Archer. “He’s as level-headed as any quarterback I’ve worked with. Cerebral and smart.”
Rush, 30, was chosen over fellow backup Trey Lance, who joined the Cowboys last season.
“Rush gives you flexibility to keep playing your game,” McCarthy added. “You don’t want to overhaul your offense based on who’s behind center.”
Rush has nine touchdown passes and 1,786 passing yards in 30 appearances for Dallas since joining as an undrafted player in 2017.
Prescott sustained his injury in the third quarter against the Atlanta Falcons, with Dallas losing 27-21 and dropping to 3-5.
Now, with four games this season under his belt, Rush will lead the Cowboys in Sunday’s matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.
