Za’Darius Smith met Detroit Lions reporters for the first time on Friday, and he made a strong impression.

On Tuesday, the Lions confirmed rumors by trading with the Cleveland Browns for defensive end Za’Darius Smith. With the Browns on a bye this week, the Lions allowed Smith a couple of days off before he joined his new team for practice on Friday. His initial conversation with reporters took place in the locker room following the session.

Smith shared thoughts on the brief break, mentioning he traveled to Florida to check on his home after recent hurricanes. He reported only minor issues, including some roof and fence damage, along with water damage to his truck.

“It was big. Tuesday, I got traded and the Browns were getting ready for their bye,” Smith said. “Coach here gave me a couple days off but not the whole week. I’m glad I got a couple days.”

Smith addressed the significance of the opportunity to check on his Florida home, noting the severe hurricane impact.

Explaining his “SMH” tweet that caused fan speculation on Tuesday, Smith clarified his intent.

“It was just taking too long,” Smith said. “But they got it done, so I deleted it. Sorry to fans who thought otherwise.”

When the possibility of joining the Lions arose, Smith was excited to face his former NFC North teams. He reiterated that excitement Friday.

“When I heard I was coming here, I thought about facing those teams again,” Smith said. “I love them—the cheese heads, great fan base, and the Skol with the Vikings was big. But now I’m in the right place. I get to face them twice—I can’t wait.”

Regarding his potential debut on Sunday against the Texans, Smith deferred to Coach Dan Campbell but showed eagerness to play.

“I’ve been in the game 10 years, so I know football,” Smith said. “It’s about learning the plays and blitzes. They want me in sync with the blitzes, so hopefully, it works out soon.”

Smith also attended the Detroit Pistons game Friday night, quickly embracing Detroit.
