Veteran Pass Rusher Impresses in Detroit’s Dominant Victory Over Jacksonville

Za’Darius Smith’s Immediate Impact

In a resounding 52-6 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, newly acquired pass rusher Za’Darius Smith made an impressive debut for the Detroit Lions. Joining the team midseason from Cleveland, Smith quickly demonstrated why Detroit brought him on board. He recorded four quarterback pressures, including two rapid disruptions, and teamed up with Jack Campbell for the Lions’ sole sack of the game.

Head coach Dan Campbell expressed his satisfaction with Smith’s performance, highlighting both his skill and seamless fit within the team.

“I thought he did some things for us, I thought he did some good things for us,” Campbell said. “He’s a guy that’s instinctive, doesn’t stay blocked long, and uses his hands really well. He’s got a knack for working with guys like Mac [Alim McNeill] and DJ [Reader]. For a first outing, I thought it was good. He fits right in with us.”

Filling a Crucial Void

Smith’s addition came as a much-needed reinforcement following the season-ending injury to Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions sought a veteran presence who could bring versatility and consistency to their defensive line, and Smith delivered. His ability to win one-on-one matchups, bolster Detroit’s stout run defense, and move fluidly across the formation was evident in his first game.

On his sack play, Smith stood upright over the interior, showcasing his adaptability and the dynamic approach he adds to Detroit’s defense. While he may not single-handedly turn the Lions’ front into a juggernaut, Smith provides critical depth and an edge when it matters most.

A Force Multiplier for Detroit’s Defense

Detroit’s defensive backfield, led by emerging stars Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, has been a strength all season. The Lions didn’t need Smith to transform their defensive identity—they needed someone to complement their existing strengths and impact key moments.

Smith’s debut hinted at his potential to become a difference-maker in big games. His presence allows the Lions to sustain pressure and disrupt opposing offenses while adding leadership and experience to a young, ambitious squad.

As Campbell aptly summarized, Smith “fits right in,” bringing the right mix of talent and mentality to a Lions team chasing postseason success. If his first outing is any indication, Za’Darius Smith could prove to be a pivotal addition in Detroit’s quest for glory.
