After sitting out two games, Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson returned to the starting role and led his team to a 28-27 victory over the Jets last week.

Richardson delivered his best performance of the season, completing 20-of-30 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 32 yards and two TDs, including the game-winner with 46 seconds left.

The Lions will visit Indianapolis this weekend, and Detroit head coach Dan Campbell discussed on Wednesday the unique challenges Richardson poses, especially following his strong showing.

“I think last week, you saw him at his best,” Campbell said. “I don’t think you can compare it to earlier in the season because they’ve let him play freely. Before, they may have held back to protect him from hits and injuries, but now, it’s all about getting first downs, scoring touchdowns, and leading the team.”

Campbell pointed out the various run plays the Colts use with Richardson, such as QB powers, RPOs, and zone-read plays, along with his scrambling ability. Richardson’s size and strength also make him tough to sack, as he can break tackles in the pocket.

“If you’ve got your arms around him in the pocket, he’ll just stiff-arm you off or press you away and then throw it deep,” Campbell said. “He’s rare with his strength, running ability, and his accurate deep ball. He can hit big plays downfield.”

Campbell noted that Richardson’s versatility, combined with running back Jonathan Taylor’s contributions, makes the Colts’ offense a significant threat. He emphasized the need to stop the run game to avoid allowing Indianapolis to control the game.

Although Richardson has completed only 48.5 percent of his passes this season, he leads the league with 15.6 yards per completion, showcasing his ability to create explosive plays. Overall, he has thrown for 1,230 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions while rushing for 274 yards and three touchdowns in 2024.
