Bears Cornerback Jaylon Johnson addressed concerns on Monday about why Chicago’s defense has not lived up to the lofty expectations they set for themselves at the beginning of the season. Johnson identified key areas where the defense has struggled and emphasized the need for improvement.

“I wouldn’t honestly say it starts upfront in the run,” Johnson said when asked about the unit’s shortcomings. “I feel like we’ve been giving up a lot of run yards, and I feel like explosive plays have really been killing us.”

These issues—run defense and limiting explosive plays—are especially concerning as Chicago prepares to face the Detroit Lions on Thursday. The Lions boast one of the most potent offenses in the NFL, with a strong rushing attack and an ability to capitalize on big plays. This could prove to be a significant challenge for a Bears defense that has been inconsistent in these areas throughout the season.

Statistically, Chicago’s defense has performed well in some areas, ranking eighth in the league in fewest points allowed per game. However, they have struggled to stop the run consistently, ranking 20th in total run defense. More troubling is their inability to limit rushing efficiency; they are allowing an average of 4.8 yards per carry, which ranks as the sixth-highest in the league. These numbers highlight a clear vulnerability that Detroit’s offense, led by standout running backs and a physical offensive line, will undoubtedly look to exploit.

Despite these struggles, the Bears can draw confidence from their performances against the Lions last season. Chicago’s defense had notable success in their two matchups against Detroit, thanks in large part to their ability to force turnovers. Lions quarterback Jared Goff threw five interceptions across the two games, which helped the Bears stay competitive. Johnson pointed to those turnovers as a blueprint for success on Thursday night.

“One thing we can take away from last year is how we were able to create turnovers,” Johnson said. “Forcing them into mistakes and taking advantage of those opportunities will be key for us.”

Turnovers have been a critical factor in the Bears’ success this season, and their ability to pressure Goff and disrupt Detroit’s offensive rhythm could make the difference in the game. Limiting the Lions’ explosive plays and tightening up against the run will also be essential if Chicago hopes to secure a victory.

With the Bears fighting to remain relevant in the playoff race, Thursday’s game against Detroit presents a pivotal opportunity for Chicago’s defense to prove they can meet the high standard they set for themselves at the start of the year.
