The Detroit Lions have spent the past two seasons searching for a reliable pass-rushing partner for Aidan Hutchinson, but their attempts so far have not yielded lasting success. A recent report suggests that the Lions may once again target a promising young edge rusher in the upcoming offseason. According to Bleacher Report’s Kris Knox, New York Giants linebacker Azeez Ojulari is a “perfect target” for the Lions.
While the Lions made a move to acquire Za’Darius Smith at the trade deadline, who will remain with the team through next season, Knox argues that Ojulari could be the long-term solution. Despite Smith providing a strong pass-rushing presence, he will be 33 years old next season, which makes finding a younger complement to Hutchinson essential. With Detroit projected to have $65 million in cap space for 2025, Ojulari could be a key addition.
Ojulari had an impressive rookie year in 2021 with eight sacks, but injuries and a reduced role over the next two seasons limited his impact. However, he’s been performing at a high level this year, already recording six sacks and on track for a career-best season. At just 24 years old, Ojulari is entering his prime and has shown the potential to be a strong No. 2 edge rusher, especially in the absence of Kayvon Thibodeaux this season.
While Smith can provide immediate help to Detroit’s pass rush while Hutchinson recovers from injury, Ojulari represents a more long-term solution. Knox suggests that pairing Ojulari with Hutchinson could form a dominant edge-rushing duo for the next several years.
In terms of Hutchinson’s recovery, while his injury in October was serious, there is a small possibility he could return this season if the Lions go on a deep playoff run. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Hutchinson’s injury was a clean break with no ligament or nerve damage, which should allow for a quicker recovery. There is hope that Hutchinson could return by the Super Bowl in February 2025, should the Lions make it that far.
