Amid the Dallas Cowboys’ struggles under coach Mike McCarthy, speculation is growing that the team will seek a new head coach after this season, despite Jerry Jones’ public statements to the contrary. One name that has come up frequently in these discussions is Deion Sanders, the current head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. Given Sanders’ success at Colorado, including the possibility of pairing him with his son, QB Shedeur Sanders, as part of a coaching and draft package, many believe he could be a strong candidate for the Cowboys’ job. However, former Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson doesn’t share that view.
Johnson, appearing on FS1’s The Facility, expressed doubt that Sanders would end up in Dallas. “I don’t think that will happen,” Johnson said. “I love Deion, but his strength is in talent acquisition, and he’s built an incredible coaching staff, which is a big reason for his success. But I don’t see him going to Dallas.”
Deion Sanders first gained attention at Jackson State before moving to Colorado, where his debut season in 2023 was underwhelming with a 4-8 record. However, in 2024, he turned the program around significantly, guiding the Buffaloes to an 8-2 record and putting them in contention for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game and the College Football Playoff. While Sanders has shown he can succeed at the college level, it remains uncertain if he can replicate that success in the NFL. What is clear, though, is that both Colorado’s future and the Cowboys’ search for a new head coach will make for compelling storylines over the next couple of months.
