Georgia football is gearing up for one of their most emotionally charged games of the season.
The Bulldogs will host Georgia Tech at Sanford Stadium on Friday night, looking to extend their winning streak over the Yellow Jackets to seven games.
Given UGA’s dominance in recent years, it’s no shock that Georgia Tech harbors strong dislike for the Bulldogs. That animosity is mutual, but the way each side expresses it seems to differ.
Yellow Jackets head coach Brent Key didn’t hold back over the summer when discussing his feelings about Georgia. From a Georgia fan’s perspective, his remarks are quite entertaining.
“There’s nothing I hate more in the world. It’s probably the only thing I hate,” Key said, according to dawgnation.com. “When I say hate, like, truly despise everything about it. I really do.”
In contrast, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart took a much calmer approach when asked about the rivalry game on Monday.
“I don’t think you get real emotional about things like that,” Smart said. “I think you’re a lot better coach when you stay composed and you coach your players and you teach your players what it’s gonna take to win the game. Which it will be an emotional game, but I don’t get emotional about it.”
Two Contrasting Approaches to the Rivalry
Key and Smart clearly have very different mindsets heading into Friday’s game. Key appears heavily invested in the emotional aspect, while Smart focuses on maintaining composure and preparing his team.
Smart recognizes the significance of beating Georgia Tech, having been involved in this rivalry for years as both a player and coach.
However, he also shows a level of respect for the Yellow Jackets, which helps him stay focused on strategy rather than emotion. This measured approach ensures his team is fully prepared to win.
Which mindset will prove effective on Friday night remains to be seen, but the odds favor Smart and Georgia, who have consistently shown they understand what it takes to succeed in this rivalry.
