In Week 11, the Indianapolis Colts made a major decision by reintroducing Anthony Richardson as their starting quarterback after a two-game stint with veteran Joe Flacco. Richardson’s return was highlighted by a thrilling 28-27 victory over the New York Jets, bringing optimism to the team. However, the Colts’ momentum quickly faltered as they suffered a tough 24-6 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 12.

Richardson’s performance in the Lions game resulted in a notable penalty. The NFL fined him $22,511 for lowering his helmet to initiate contact with Lions’ safety Brian Branch. This move violated the league’s strict policies on helmet-to-helmet contact, especially as the NFL has become increasingly stringent about such infractions. Many feel the fine was harsh, as Richardson’s play didn’t appear to be overly aggressive or reckless.

Quarterbacks are typically given extra protection on the field, but the NFL has cracked down this season on any offensive player using their helmet to initiate contact, including running backs. In a similar situation, Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs faced even higher fines, totaling $45,020 for similar violations. Despite Richardson’s hefty fine, there was some irony in the situation, as the 6’4”, 250-pound quarterback powered through a tackle attempt by the smaller Branch to gain an additional 10 yards.

The Colts’ decision to reinstate Richardson as the starting quarterback came after a period of uncertainty. Richardson had been benched earlier in the season in favor of Flacco, following an unusual incident in Week 8 where Richardson self-removed himself from the game due to exhaustion. Despite his experience, Flacco was unable to secure victories, leading the Colts to a disappointing 4-6 record at the time.

Recognizing the need for a change, the Colts brought Richardson back into the lineup, hoping his growth and preparation would lead to more consistent performances. The Colts are currently 5-7, still in the hunt for the AFC South title, as the division has struggled overall. Head coach Shane Steichen has hinted that further adjustments may be necessary, but Richardson is expected to remain the team’s starting quarterback moving forward.

Although the Colts are in a challenging position, they still have an opportunity to reach .500 or better by the end of the season. The team’s future largely hinges on Richardson’s continued development and ability to lead them to more victories. The Colts hope that his maturation will help turn their season around.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions have been enjoying a remarkable season, maintaining an impressive 11-1 record after a Thanksgiving win over the Chicago Bears. The Lions are currently on a 10-game winning streak and are firmly positioned as one of the NFL’s top teams. As they prepare for their next game against the Green Bay Packers, the Lions continue to solidify their place as a dominant force in the league.
