The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have re-signed a familiar player to address their thinning safety roster.

On Tuesday, the team announced the signing of safety Kaevon Merriweather from the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. Merriweather, who began the year with Tampa Bay, appeared in three games before being released on Nov. 18 and subsequently joining Detroit’s practice squad. Now, he returns to Tampa Bay after being signed off the Lions’ squad.

This decision appears to be a response to the Buccaneers’ worsening safety depth. Safety Jordan Whitehead suffered a pectoral injury in Week 12 against the Giants and was placed on injured reserve. His replacement, Mike Edwards, signed after his release from the Titans, sustained a hamstring injury in Week 13 against the Panthers and is awaiting MRI results.

Merriweather’s exact role remains uncertain. He could step in as a starter for Edwards or provide depth in case backups like Tykee Smith or Christian Izien also face injuries.
