Detroit bolstered its practice squad by signing a journeyman cornerback to manage a string of injuries.

On Tuesday, the Lions announced several roster changes to offset recent losses, including adding CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver to the practice squad.

LB Anthony Pittman joined the active roster from Jacksonville’s practice squad, while CBs Carlton Davis, Khalil Dorsey, and DL Alim McNeill landed on the Reserve/Injured list. Detroit’s Week 15 loss to Buffalo on the field was overshadowed by significant defensive setbacks.

Thomas-Oliver, last with the Giants, hasn’t played in the NFL since 2022 with the Panthers. While unlikely to make a major impact, the move reflects a calculated gamble by Detroit’s front office.

Lions Sign Ex-Panthers CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver for Depth

Drafted in the seventh round by Carolina in 2020, Thomas-Oliver appeared in 25 games over three seasons before bouncing between teams. After being unsigned this season, he now has an unexpected opportunity amid Detroit’s secondary struggles.

Primarily a special teams contributor, he recorded 17 tackles and struggled in coverage, allowing passer ratings of 153.2 and 135.4 in 2020 and 2021. Early performances didn’t inspire confidence in his defensive skills.

At 26 years old, with a six-foot frame, Thomas-Oliver has physical traits that could be refined under Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Glenn’s reputation as a top-tier coach with strong assistants makes this a potential springboard for Thomas-Oliver’s career.

To make room, DE Isaiah Thomas was released from the practice squad. If Thomas-Oliver impresses during these final weeks, he might secure a spot in Detroit’s 2025 training camp.

Despite the injuries, Detroit remains in control of its NFC destiny and is favored to secure the No. 1 seed. They face the Bears next, followed by the 49ers and Vikings. Only Minnesota poses a playoff challenge, and Detroit could clinch the top seed depending on Philadelphia’s results.

Avoiding further defensive injuries is critical, but shoring up the secondary remains a priority for the Lions as the season winds down.
