The Dallas Cowboys entered the game with high expectations, hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive with some help. They needed the Washington Commanders to lose to the Philadelphia Eagles earlier in the day. Unfortunately, despite a valiant effort, the Eagles lost after Jalen Hurts was injured, and Jayden Daniels’ late-game heroics sealed the Cowboys’ postseason fate. However, the Cowboys came out strong in their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, showing heart and determination despite the stakes. Here’s a breakdown of what led to their victory.

Brandon Aubrey was dependable

Despite scoring 26 points, the Cowboys struggled to finish drives with touchdowns. Fortunately, they had Brandon Aubrey, who proved reliable whenever they crossed midfield. Aubrey came through with multiple clutch kicks, including a 58-yard field goal just before halftime to give the Cowboys a 23-14 lead. He finished the season 14 of 16 on field goals from 50 yards or more, with a career-long 65-yarder. His consistency was crucial in giving the Cowboys enough points to secure the win.

The secondary played great

The Cowboys’ secondary was exceptional, displaying a level of physicality not seen in quite some time. Donovan Wilson’s aggressive hits on receivers over the middle, including a sack on Baker Mayfield, set the tone. Jourdan Lewis was particularly impressive, breaking up multiple passes, including a crucial fourth-down stop. His interception in the end zone, despite interference, was a key moment in the game. The secondary kept star receiver Mike Evans under 70 yards and DaRon Bland sealed the win with a fumble recovery on Rachaad White. This unit was outstanding throughout the game.

The team showed resilience

Throughout the season, the Cowboys’ heart and determination have often been questioned. But in this game, they proved they still have the will to compete, even when there’s nothing left to play for. Despite being riddled with injuries, including several key players on injured reserve, the Cowboys played hard against a playoff-contending team. Head coach Mike McCarthy has been the subject of much scrutiny, but the team’s preparation and resilience were evident as they fought hard against the Buccaneers. Offensively, they had a solid game plan to handle Tampa Bay’s aggressive blitzing defense, with Cooper Rush doing an excellent job of making quick decisions and getting the ball to the right players.

CeeDee Lamb’s toughness

By Week 16, many players are banged up and ready for the offseason, but not CeeDee Lamb. Despite playing through a shoulder injury that caused him pain and discomfort, Lamb continued to fight. Even when taking hard hits, he fought through double coverage to make big plays. His effort and determination were key to the Cowboys’ victory, showing his commitment to his team despite the challenges.
