In a major shift, the Detroit Red Wings have named Todd McLellan as the 29th head coach in the team’s history, signing him to a multi-year deal. This decision follows the dismissal of head coach Derek Lalonde and associate coach Bob Boughner, effective immediately.

McLellan, with extensive coaching experience from his time with the Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers, will take charge of the Red Wings as they continue their rebuilding process. He is recognized for his leadership and ability to develop teams, with a proven track record of creating competitive squads in the NHL. Alongside McLellan, Trent Yawney has been brought on as an assistant coach to strengthen the team’s coaching staff. This marks the beginning of a new era for the organization, which is eager to regain playoff contention.

Derek Lalonde’s tenure with the Red Wings concludes with an overall record of 89-86-23 over nearly two and a half seasons. Meanwhile, McLellan, the incoming head coach, has accumulated a career record of 598-412-134 during his 16 years in the NHL.

The Red Wings, in the midst of a rebuild, are hopeful that this coaching change will inject the team with the energy and direction needed to push them closer to their playoff goals.
