The debate over which sport owns Christmas Day took a new twist this year when NBA icon LeBron James declared that Christmas is “our day” for basketball, despite his admiration for the NFL. James’ comment sparked a spirited conversation about the sports traditions surrounding the holiday.

Detroit Lions Players React Strongly

Many Detroit Lions players disagreed with James’ claim, asserting that Christmas Day belongs to football. Lions defensive end Za’Darius Smith was among the first to respond, emphasizing that Christmas is a time when families come together, and they prefer watching the hard-hitting action of football. “I definitely believe Christmas is for football,” Smith said. “Families want to watch physical football, not just people dunking or dribbling.”

Allen Robinson Supports Football’s Supremacy

Lions wide receiver Allen Robinson also weighed in, asserting that football holds a unique place in American sports culture. “Football is the number one sport in this country,” Robinson stated. “The NFL could claim any day, and people would still tune in. The ratings speak for themselves. While I respect the NBA and enjoy watching it, the NFL is a different level of popularity.”

Football’s Hold on Christmas Continues

While both the NFL and NBA now compete for attention on Christmas Day, Lions players remain firm in their belief that football should dominate the holiday. As the rivalry between the two leagues continues, the Lions are committed to preserving football’s place as the Christmas Day tradition.
