The Detroit Lions might seek a young wide receiver in April’s draft, and a late-blooming mid-round prospect has emerged as a possibility.
After two underwhelming seasons, Jameson Williams has delivered for the Lions this year. His career-best 143 yards in Week 16 against the Bears leaves him just 110 yards from a 1,000-yard season. Williams ranks third in the league with 18.9 yards per catch and has stood out as a blocker.
Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown are firmly established in the Lions’ receiver group. Tim Patrick has excelled as the No. 3 option, but with free agency ahead, he may explore other opportunities.
While wide receiver isn’t a primary need for Detroit in the 2025 draft, GM Brad Holmes consistently prioritizes adding young talent, regardless of immediate requirements.
Late-Blooming WR Prospect Matches Lions’ Draft Plans
Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski recently highlighted ideal team fits for 2025 wide receiver prospects. This draft class features elite talent, but mid-round gems remain available.
Sobleski identified Illinois wideout Pat Bryant as a strong match for the Lions, placing Detroit among three teams best suited for him.
“The 6’3″, 200-pound receiver offers rare X-receiver size and physicality for a Day 2 pick. He has the burst to separate from cornerbacks and the control to win deep throws,” Sobleski noted.
“Despite Illinois’ 83rd-ranked passing offense, Bryant maximized his chances and can impress further at the Senior Bowl.”
Bryant’s breakout year included 984 yards, 10 touchdowns, and an 18.2 yards-per-catch average (fourth in FBS for players with 50+ catches). His seven touchdowns in 2023 hinted at this year’s surge.
Illinois’ offense under Bret Bielema isn’t known for heavy passing, so Bryant’s pre-draft workouts could boost his stock. Currently seen as a fourth or fifth-round pick, Bryant could climb to Day 2. If Detroit targets a receiver, Bryant’s potential fits well with their draft strategy.
