Sikkema predicts the Lions will draft Arkansas edge rusher Landon Jackson in the first round.

The Detroit Lions have attempted to find a complement to star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson through the NFL Draft and free agency but have faced challenges in doing so.

In the upcoming draft, the Lions may try again. Analyst Trevor Sikkema from Pro Football Focus predicts they will use their No. 32 overall pick on one of the tallest prospects available — a 6-foot-7 pass rusher who could relieve pressure on Hutchinson and bolster the defensive line.

Mock Draft Suggests Defensive Reinforcement

Sikkema highlighted the Lions’ struggles in generating a pass rush after Hutchinson sustained a fractured leg in October, prematurely ending his regular season. With Hutchinson on injured reserve, no other pass rusher matched his production level.

Sikkema predicts the Lions will draft Arkansas edge rusher Landon Jackson in the first round.

“Aidan Hutchinson still leads the Lions in sacks (7.5) as we head into the playoffs,” Sikkema wrote. “It’s clear they need pass-rush reinforcements this offseason. Jackson, at 6-foot-7 and 275 pounds, is a rare edge rusher with a solid burst and surprising agility for his size. His profile will likely appeal to Detroit.”

Jackson delivered an impressive three-year performance at Arkansas, accumulating 16.0 sacks, 116 total tackles, and 28 tackles for loss.

Despite losing Hutchinson, the Lions had a strong season, dropping only one game after his injury in a win over the Dallas Cowboys. Their investment in defense has paid off, including their 2024 first-round selection of cornerback Terrion Arnold, who recorded 60 tackles and 10 pass breakups in 15 starts.

Hutchinson could return this season, with rehab on track to finish in February. He has expressed readiness to play in the Super Bowl if the Lions advance.

Rookie May Require Development

In its scouting report, Bleacher Report described Jackson as having significant potential but noted he might not make an immediate impact in the NFL.

“Jackson has the tools to become a reliable, every-down defensive end in even fronts or a 4i- to 5-technique in odd fronts,” the report stated. “While he may not achieve perennial Pro Bowl or All-Pro status, he has the potential to be a solid starter for an NFL team.”

The analysis praised Jackson’s size and suggested he could enhance his productivity by building on his already impressive 6-foot-7, 280-pound frame.

“Landon Jackson’s size immediately stands out, as he looks every bit the part of an NFL defensive end,” the report added. “Moreover, he carries his weight well and has room to grow if a team decides to add more bulk to his frame.”
