The Detroit Lions have struggled to find a complementary edge rusher to pair with star Aidan Hutchinson, despite efforts through the NFL Draft and free agency. As the upcoming draft approaches, one expert predicts that the Lions might select a standout pass rusher to help bolster their defense. Pro Football Focus analyst Trevor Sikkema has suggested that the team could use their first-round pick (No. 32 overall) on Landon Jackson, a 6-foot-7 edge rusher from Arkansas.
Sikkema highlighted that the Lions’ pass rush faltered when Hutchinson was sidelined with a fractured leg in October, and without Hutchinson, the defense lacked another player to replicate his production. Jackson, with his imposing size and burst, is seen as a potential solution. The analyst pointed out Jackson’s 6-foot-7, 275-pound frame, which stands out for a player of his position. Despite his size, Jackson also possesses notable speed and agility, making him an intriguing prospect for Detroit.
Jackson had a solid three-year career at Arkansas, recording 16 sacks and 116 tackles, including 28 tackles for loss. Although the Lions were still successful after Hutchinson’s injury, they will likely seek additional pass-rush help in the offseason to further strengthen their defensive line.
While Jackson’s potential is evident, Bleacher Report notes that he may require some development before becoming an immediate contributor. The report described Jackson as a capable traditional defensive end, potentially excelling in either a 4-3 or 3-4 front, but emphasized that he might not become a high-sack machine right away. However, his size and athleticism give him a high ceiling, and with further physical development, he could evolve into a reliable starter.
As for Hutchinson, he is expected to fully recover from his injury and could potentially return for the Super Bowl if the Lions make it that far.
