The Detroit Lions’ defense has been one of the NFL’s strongest units and a major reason for the team’s success in 2024. They are allowing only 20.1 points and 98.4 rushing yards per game, both ranking in the league’s top 10.
Detroit’s secondary has significantly improved this season after struggling in 2023. The cornerback group, led by rookie Terrion Arnold and veteran Carlton Davis before his injury, has been impressive. However, the safety duo of Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch has been the true driving force of the Lions’ defensive backfield.
Joseph led the league with nine interceptions during the regular season, while Branch recorded a 90.0 run defense grade and allowed a 72.3 passer rating when targeted. Together, they formed arguably the best safety pairing in the league and represent outstanding Day 2 draft picks by general manager Brad Holmes.
Despite having these cornerstone safeties, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggested the Lions could be a trade destination for New Orleans Saints defensive back Tyrann Mathieu.
“Contending teams looking for a playmaker in the secondary should place calls about safety Tyrann Mathieu,” Knox wrote. “While the 32-year-old isn’t the Pro Bowl talent he once was, he was productive this past season.”
Knox added, “The Detroit Lions, who took a chance on Jamal Adams this season but ultimately parted ways, could be interested. Safety isn’t a massive need for Detroit, but it will be interested in adding playmakers to its defense.”
Although Mathieu recorded three interceptions and seven pass deflections in 2024, Lions general manager Brad Holmes should avoid trading draft capital for a 32-year-old safety past his prime.
While Mathieu remains a starting-caliber player, the Lions do not need another safety and can find depth without sacrificing valuable draft picks. Instead, Detroit should prioritize extending Joseph this offseason rather than pursuing a trade for Tyrann Mathieu.
