The Detroit Lions are gearing up for their first playoff game of the season, facing the Washington Commanders, who unexpectedly secured a spot after a victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The game is set for Saturday, January 18, and while the Lions are taking their matchup seriously, they’re feeling optimistic heading into the postseason.

In a positive turn of events, the Lions are receiving some welcome news as they approach the playoffs, particularly regarding their injury situation. After struggling with injuries throughout the season, the team is starting to see some key players return. The Lions recently enjoyed a much-needed bye week, allowing several players to recover.

Head coach Dan Campbell shared on January 13 that running back David Montgomery is expected to return for the playoff game against the Commanders. Campbell emphasized Montgomery’s importance to the team, calling him a “bell cow” and a “tone-setter.” He expressed that having Montgomery back on the field would be a huge boost for the Lions, especially as they prepare for the postseason.

Analysts, including Brad Berreman of SideLion Report, have echoed Campbell’s optimism, noting that Montgomery’s return could be pivotal for the Lions’ playoff push. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs had stepped up in Montgomery’s absence, recording impressive numbers, but having Montgomery back could elevate the team’s offensive performance even further.

In addition to Montgomery’s return, Campbell also mentioned that offensive guard Kevin Zeitler and cornerback Terrion Arnold are recovering well from their injuries. While there are no guarantees about their return, Campbell’s update suggests positive progress. The Lions will have a clearer picture of their injury status by January 14, just days before the game.

Campbell joked at the start of his press conference that the team didn’t suffer any injuries during the bye week, keeping the mood light ahead of their playoff preparations.
