The Detroit Lions have one of the top running back situations in the NFL with a strong duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Both players are under contract for the 2025 season, meaning the core of the running back group will remain stable for the near future.

However, the situation behind Gibbs and Montgomery is less clear. Two of the Lions’ backup running backs, Craig Reynolds and Jermar Jefferson, will become free agents in 2025, and the status of rookie running back Sione Vaki is still uncertain. If the Lions choose not to re-sign Reynolds or Jefferson, they may look for a veteran backup to provide depth.

Injuries to both Montgomery and Gibbs over the past two seasons have highlighted the importance of having a reliable backup running back. With that in mind, adding a veteran could be a wise move for the Lions to ensure they are prepared for any future injuries.

According to a prediction by Cam Garrity of Patriots Wire, the New England Patriots are unlikely to re-sign running back JaMycal Hasty, and he could land with the Lions on a one-year, $1.75 million contract. Hasty has been a serviceable backup throughout his career, and his dual-threat ability as both a runner and receiver could make him an attractive option for Detroit.

Hasty joined the Patriots and earned a roster spot, but he has not been able to make a significant impact. With Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson under contract, the Patriots are unlikely to keep Hasty, especially after they signed Terrell Jennings for next season and expect Kevin Harris to return to camp.

Over his five seasons in the NFL, Hasty has averaged 4.0 yards per carry and has caught 60 passes for 375 yards and two touchdowns. Though his 2024 season was relatively quiet, with just 20 carries for 69 yards and 10 receptions for 59 yards, it’s worth noting that the Patriots struggled with a poor offensive line.

For the Lions, the most probable scenario would be re-signing Reynolds and/or Jefferson and maintaining the current running back depth chart. However, if neither returns, the Lions could potentially target a veteran like Hasty to strengthen their backup options.

While nothing is set in stone, Hasty’s experience and ability to contribute both as a rusher and a receiver could make him an appealing addition for the Lions if they need a reliable backup for the 2025 season.
