The Detroit Lions are celebrating the return of star running back David Montgomery as they gear up to face the Washington Commanders in Saturday’s Divisional Round.

Montgomery’s recovery from an MCL injury has rejuvenated a Lions team eager to maximize its offensive potential.

Montgomery has been sidelined since Week 15 against the Buffalo Bills, and early concerns suggested surgery might end his season.

After consulting medical experts, Montgomery chose rehab over surgery, enabling his playoff return. His hard work has paid off, as he now participates fully in practices.

“It feels good,” Montgomery told ESPN’s Eric Woodyard. “Just being back to help the team again. I missed this, so I’m excited to contribute.”

Despite missing three games, Montgomery was cautious, ensuring his return wouldn’t risk further injury. “I wouldn’t be out there if I wasn’t ready,” he assured fans.

A Vital Cog in Detroit’s Offense

Before his injury, Montgomery was integral to Detroit’s success, recording 775 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 185 carries across 14 games. He formed a dynamic tandem with rookie Jahmyr Gibbs, powering the Lions’ high-scoring offense.

Head coach Dan Campbell praised Montgomery’s return, saying, “He’s a tone-setter and a catalyst. Having him back is huge for us.”

Montgomery’s presence strengthens Detroit’s offense and challenges Washington’s defense, ranked 30th against the run, to contain the Lions’ rushing attack.

Playoff Momentum Build

The Lions enter the playoffs with confidence, boosted by Montgomery’s return. Detroit, ranked sixth in rushing during the regular season, sees Montgomery as a game-changer for their postseason aspirations.
