Since Dan Campbell became the head coach of the Detroit Lions in 2021, the team has developed a reputation for being one of the most aggressive in the NFL when it comes to fourth-down attempts.
Statistically, the Lions have converted 84 of their 151 fourth-down attempts from the 2021 season to the end of the 2024 campaign, boasting a 55.6% success rate. The Cleveland Browns are the only team with a comparable rate.
While some analysts and fans — both locally and nationally — may be critical of Campbell’s bold strategy, the Lions’ coordinators and players fully support it.
Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn emphasized that the team’s mindset is built around handling sudden changes in the game, such as failed fourth-down conversions or turnovers. Glenn stressed that the team sees these moments as opportunities, with the defense always prepared to get on the field quickly. “We’re 100 percent behind our head coach,” Glenn said, highlighting the commitment of the players and coaching staff.
Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who is responsible for designing plays for these critical fourth-down situations, expressed that aggressive playcalling is now embedded in the team’s identity. “It’s been part of us since Coach Campbell arrived,” Johnson explained, noting that the team’s players embrace it, and the strategy has contributed to the Lions’ offensive success.
Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp praised Campbell’s game preparation, noting his ability to predict how games will unfold. Fipp stressed that Campbell’s foresight ensures his team is always prepared for the aggressive decisions that could include special teams involvement. “He knows exactly what it’s going to take,” Fipp said. “He has an incredible ability to predict how the game will go.”
As the Lions prepare for a divisional round playoff game against the Washington Commanders, Campbell’s aggressive style continues to be a hallmark. The Commanders, with the highest fourth-down conversion rate this season at 87%, are sure to challenge the Lions’ approach.
Lions rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold believes practicing against such an aggressive offense has its advantages, preparing the defense for any situation. “Our coach does a great job of putting us in those situations,” Arnold said, noting how these practices help them excel under pressure.
Wide receiver Jameson Williams shared the same sentiment, praising Campbell’s unwavering confidence in the offense. “It’s fun,” Williams said. “I love how Coach Campbell believes in us. We execute in ways others don’t, and that’s how we win.”
As the Lions continue their playoff push, Campbell’s bold strategy remains a defining characteristic of their identity, and the team embraces it as key to their success.
