After posting a picture from Halas Hall on his social media, it became clear that former Detroit Lions practice squad member Maurice Alexander Jr. was preparing to sign a reserve/futures contract with the Chicago Bears.
NFL reporter Aaron Wilson of Houston’s KPRC has now confirmed that the deal is official.
Alexander went undrafted in 2020 after spending four years at Florida International University. He earned First-Team All-Conference USA honors as a punt returner in 2018, the same year he transitioned to wide receiver after playing quarterback for his first two seasons with the Panthers.
Standing at 5’11” and 174 pounds, the 28-year-old receiver/returner was with the Lions from 2022 to 2024, moving between the practice squad and active roster multiple times. He has played in seven games, recording one catch for seven yards, four punt returns for 42 yards, and six kickoff returns for 146 yards.
He also made an impact during a 2023 preseason game.
Before joining the Lions, Alexander was an All-USFL selection in 2022 as a kick returner for the Philadelphia Stars.
With Ben Johnson now leading the Bears, Alexander may not be the last former Lion to head to Chicago. Having players familiar with the new coach’s system can be beneficial.
