BYU football has seen some great rivalries throughout history. While many of these matchups have delivered unforgettable moments and thrilling plays, three teams stand out as frequent victors over BYU. Two of these are in-state rivals, while one is an old adversary. Let’s explore the three teams BYU has struggled against the most.

1. Utah: 33-59-4.

BYU’s rivalry with Utah is the most intense football game of the year in Utah. Fans fill LaVell Edwards Stadium and Rice Eccles Stadium, creating an electric atmosphere. Both teams have experienced 9-game winning streaks, and the contests are often tight. Utah leads the series overall, winning 34.4% of the games. However, BYU has the upper hand in recent matchups, with a two-game winning streak. The rivalry dates back to 1922 and has provided many exciting moments.

2. Utah State: 51-37-3.

Another significant in-state rivalry for BYU is Utah State, with the teams competing for the Old Wagon Wheel, a historic symbol of Utah’s pioneer heritage. Although BYU leads the series with a 57.7% win rate, there have been several competitive games over the years where Utah State came out on top. Currently, BYU has a three-game winning streak, and these two teams have the potential to produce more thrilling matchups in the future.

3. Wyoming Cowboys: 47-38-3.

BYU’s rivalry with Wyoming is not as old as its battles with Utah and Utah State, but it still carries notable moments. The two teams have had their share of exciting games, with BYU winning the most recent meeting in 2024 by a score of 34-14. Overall, BYU has won 60.6% of their matchups, and currently enjoys a ten-game winning streak over the Cowboys.

Overall, BYU has experienced many memorable series with these teams. With both BYU and Utah now in the Big 12 Conference, more matchups are likely on the horizon. Utah State and Wyoming, being in the Mountain West Conference, may not meet BYU as frequently, but occasional games between them would still be exciting.
