Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is stepping into a new career venture outside of football during the offseason. On January 31, 2025, Goff announced through social media that he is joining an investment group led by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores, aiming to bring a WNBA team back to Detroit. This initiative includes other notable investors such as former NBA players Grant Hill and Chris Webber, along with Detroit Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp. Goff expressed his excitement, calling the opportunity a fantastic one for the city and its dedicated fanbase.
Webber also shared his enthusiasm on Instagram, expressing his anticipation for the new venture, particularly as a “girldad.” He mentioned his enjoyment of coaching his daughter’s 2nd-grade basketball team but noted how excited he was to share this new development with them.
Detroit previously had a successful WNBA team, the Detroit Shock, from 1998 to 2009. The Shock won multiple titles and were consistently among the top teams in league attendance. The team relocated in 2010, eventually becoming the Dallas Wings. Given the WNBA’s rising popularity, driven by stars like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, this new push to bring the league back to Detroit holds strong promise.
Alongside Goff, his wife Christen is also part of the bid, showing her support through social media with a “LetsBringIt” hashtag. Other cities such as , Philadelphia, and Tennessee are also competing for a WNBA franchise, but with Detroit’s recent sports success, the city might be well-positioned to secure one.
